Chuseok: Returning to Our Roots

On Inheritance, Transcendence, and the Ontology of Life

Is Chuseok not merely a day to honor our ancestors and repeat inherited traditions, but an occasion to reflect on the history of life and the consciousness that made us who we are?

Where do I come from, and what kind of world have I inherited? What has shaped who I am today, and how do I carry that world forward?

Human existence never begins with the self alone. We are born into a world already shaped by the lives of those who came before us, forming our identities within cultures, beliefs, and traditions we never chose.

The fact that I exist today means that countless lives have preceded me and continued through generations. In this sense, Chuseok can be understood as a ritual of acknowledging our origins and expressing gratitude for the continuity of life.

Yet remembering our origins does not necessarily mean returning to the past.

The world we inherit contains wisdom that has sustained life, but it also holds structures created for survival in another time—structures that may now constrain us.

To understand the past is not to accept everything it contains. It is to discern what enabled us to survive, what deserves to be carried forward, and what must be transcended.

To break through the world that shaped us, we must first understand that world.

If we attempt to escape the world that formed us without understanding it, we may end up reproducing its old patterns in different forms, even as we believe we have rejected them.

True transcendence is neither simple rejection nor escape. It is the process of understanding the world that shaped us and redefining our relationship with it.

This thought brings to mind the transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly through the stage of a chrysalis.

For a caterpillar to become a butterfly, it must undergo a transformation beyond its former way of being. Perhaps we, too, need a period in which we examine the world that shaped us and move beyond the identities formed within it.

Without the chrysalis, there can be no butterfly. Yet the butterfly is not born to remain within it.

The world we inherit is much the same. It is the foundation that made us who we are, but it is not necessarily a place in which we must remain forever.

Inheritance is not the mere repetition of the past. It is the act of carrying forward the values of life preserved by previous generations while refusing to pass on, unchanged, the limitations they could not overcome.

Gratitude for the past and responsibility for the future cannot be separated.

From the perspective of Christian faith, human life is not a possession we have created for ourselves, but a gift received from God. To reflect on the origins of life, therefore, is not merely to express gratitude. It is also to ask how we are to live the life we have received and what we will pass on to future generations.

Chuseok is a time to remember the lives that made our existence possible and to ask how we will carry that life forward.

What have I inherited, and what must I create anew? What should I pass on to the next generation: the forms of the past, or the essence of life preserved within them?

To remember our origins is not to remain in the past, but to live the life we have received in a new way.

To understand our roots without being confined by them. To be grateful for the life we have received while carrying it forward into new possibilities.

This is the meaning of inheritance and transcendence that I wish to contemplate through Chuseok.
