Resetting for Mental Health 1. Not “How Will Others Feel?” but “How Am I?”

I am looking inward to understand myself better.

I am observing what I react to, what I fear, what I spend my money and energy on,

and whom I give my heart to.

And then I realized something.

I was spending more energy than I had imagined, almost automatically, wondering, “How will others feel?”

I wonder why I have lived that way.

I have been a nurse for a long time, and I have lived within the framework of nursing and Christian values.

Values such as caring, sacrifice, service, and sharing have been important principles in my life.

Those values nourished me and encouraged me to become a good person.

But looking back, I realize that they sometimes prevented me from being good to myself.

No matter how good a value may be, if it does not serve me,

and if it continually exhausts and harms me,

then it is worth examining whether I have truly understood and applied that value in the right way.

Caring for others does not mean neglecting myself.

Sacrificing is not the same as sacrificing myself.

So now, I want to look after myself first.

Rather than first asking whether something is good for someone else, I want to first ask myself how I am.

This does not mean that I am giving up a life of caring for others.

Rather, it means that I will live a life that includes me.

I have always placed others first as those in my care, but now, I choose to place myself first among those in my care.

I will first notice whether I am hungry or tired, what I need, and what I do not want.

I will ask myself what I truly want.

I will pause instead of responding immediately to every request.

I will not give myself to everyone.

And I will choose.

Being able to choose means that I can actively become the owner of my own life.

This realization makes me feel deeply free.

Now, I choose to become the first person I care for.

This is the first resetting for my mental health that I am beginning.
